For many years, meditation has been closely related with religion, mysticism and spirituality and skinny gurus with white beard doing some strange postures and chanting mantras. But in recent decades, more and more people started understanding the power and the benefits of meditation. They use it to connect with their spirituality, to learn more about themselves and get away from the pressures of everyday life.

Various studies have shown that meditation relaxes your muscles and declutters your mind. The result is a mind and body rejuvenation, and increased immunity to stress. Mindfulness practice is being employed in psychology to alleviate a variety of mental and physical conditions, such as bringing about reductions in depression symptoms, reducing stress, anxiety and in the treatment of drug addiction.

And it's not only for adults, there are many educational institutes that have implemented meditation. They are seeing decreased suspensions and detentions and improvement in children’s behavior and ability to pay attention. Even some large companies have introduced mindfulness programs to their employees. Their goal is to help reduce stress and improve reactions to stress. One of the best known company that implements mindfulness is Google. The company offers more than a dozen meditation courses but its most prominent one is called "Search Inside Yourself" and has been implemented since 2007.

Benefits of the Meditation:

Why have psychologists and psychiatrists become extremely busy these days? The answer is pretty simple.
Research has shown that a huge number of people find it extremely difficult to cope with the stress and strain of this highly demanding world.
When they cannot find a solution to various issues, they inevitably go to qualified professionals for help and that is exactly why they have become inundated with work.

Various studies have shown that seeking professional assistance makes a positive impact in the lives of a good number of people, but it has not yet succeeded fully in improving the mental health of the people up to the desired levels. That is exactly where meditation steps in. There are many benefits of meditation, both mental and physical.

The Universal Appeal Of Meditation

Various people process things differently. For example; eating habits of different people vary and other aspects like the way they understand information. Healing and restoring power of the people also differ with individuals.
Because of this aspect, medical practitioners and other related professionals working in the field of mental health cannot advocate the same method of treatment for all people.
In such a situation, the significance of meditation becomes all the more relevant. It can be said without any doubt that you can advocate meditation for every individual who suffers from stress.

Anybody irrespective of age or gender can practice meditation. Recent trends indicate that the popularity of meditation has increased exponentially, especially in the last 10 years or so.

Meditation through history

Some of the earliest references to meditation are found in the Hindu Vedas of Nepal and India. "We meditate on that desirable light of the divine Savitri, who influences our pious rites" (Rgveda : Mandala-3, Sukta-62, Rcha-10). Around the 6th to 5th centuries BCE, other forms of meditation developed via Confucianism and Taoism in China as well as Hinduism, Jainism, and early Buddhism in Nepal and India.

There are many different forms of meditation, from "dynamic meditation" such as yoga, physical postures (sitting, supine, standing, full-lotus, half-lotus, kneeling...). Also tensing and relaxing muscle groups in a sequential pattern whilst concentrating on how they feel, while walking... There are also several methods for mindfulness meditation, such as body scan techniques or letting thought arise and pass. Or just simple mindfull tasks, such as being aware of the taste and texture of the food that we eat.

There are no exact statistics on how many corporations are utilizing meditation in the workplace. It is estimated that around a quarter of US employers are using stress reduction initiatives and the number is growing.
Many large companies, as well as some educational institutes and even prisons, have introduced mindfulness programs to their employees to help reduce stress and improve reactions to stress.

For someone just starting to meditate, it can be difficult to achieve it, but the need for the meditator to retrain his attention, whether through concentration or mindfulness, is the single invariant ingredient in every meditation system.

It has a calming effect and directs awareness inward until pure awareness is achieved. It's described as "being awake inside without being aware of anything except awareness itself".
